the HOTEL
Gingerflower Boutique Hotel is a luxury heritage hotel housed in a beautifully restored Peranakan townhouse within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Melaka, very close to popular places of interest and landmarks such as Jonker Walk, Christ Church, A Famosa and many more. The vibrant streets, charming restaurants, local food and striking wall murals characteristic of Melaka are no more than a few steps away.
Built long and narrow, the historical townhouse has three characteristic air well courtyards that interspace the long narrow throughway to the back. These allow fresh air to circulate through the building as the air wells open up to the sky and also allow sunlight to stream in, providing natural ventilation and lighting to the interior. Part of the restoration efforts of Gingerflower Boutique Hotel include preserving an original turn-of-the-century water well situated in the building's first air well courtyard. This water well played an important part of Peranakan life at the time, being the only source of water for all the household needs for the Peranakan family that had stayed in the townhouse then.
Much of the antique marble, still beautiful though faded with an aged patina, has been meticulously reconditioned in many areas of the Hotel. The vividly coloured Peranakan wall mouldings and plaster renderings in the Hotel’s front facade has also been painstakingly restored. The timber ceiling beams were then sympathetically refurbished and the walls were painted thoroughly with ground sea shell calcium paint which allows the walls to breathe.
Modern fittings and finishes, such as Italian marble bathrooms with rain showers and luxurious amenities, have been thoughtfully included during the restoration process, whilst ensuring that the original character of the townhouse was carefully retained. With this seamless fusion of antique and contemporary, you can now experience a fragment of history, while enjoying a comfortable and meaningful stay in Melaka filled with warm memories.

the LOCATION
With its convenient location on Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, or Heeren Street as it is more commonly known as, Melaka’s rich history starts right at the doorstep of Gingerflower Boutique Hotel. Though less bustling than nearby Jonker Street, Heeren Street has arguably more old world charm and boasts amazing sights and interesting stories.
Initially called Heeren Street, this narrow street was renamed Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock after its namesake passed away on Dec 13, 1960 to recognise the patriot’s contributions to Malaysia. It was once the choice neighbourhood for prosperous Straits-born Chinese in the mid-19th and early 20th century.
As with most houses on Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, Gingerflower Boutique Hotel is narrow yet long on the inside. This is because during Dutch rule, property taxes were based on the width of each house, instead of the total area. Other characteristic features include ornately decorated façades, open courtyards to provide ventilation and light and small wells to draw water.
A short walk from the Hotel will take you to the busy street of Jonker Street which is flanked on both sides of the road with heritage houses dating back to the 17th century. From there, learn more about the history of Melaka with a visit to the nearby places of interests such as the Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum, Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, Dutch Square, Christ Church Melaka and The Stadthuys.
